Google has published a concept for web design called "Accelerated Mobile Pages" or "AMP". What is AMP? AMP is basically a bare bones approach for a web page. But one other thing to keep in mind. AMP is specifically targeted for the hand-held devices - Smartphones...The hand-held devices/smart-phones cannot render heavy web pages. Heavy web pages have large images and fancy code to make the images slide or rotate or fade etc. All this code takes resources from your phone. The phone processor cannot keep up, and thus, you have slow loading web pages on your smart phone. So, to fix this problem, Google is strongly recommending that the website designers ( webmasters ) apply "AMP Code".
Some of the fancy web code we have been using to build todays websites is now no longer allowed according to the "AMP" standard. I know this is starting to sound complicated and confusing. Some of it is but I want to try to get you through this in a simple way. Google wants the phone web pages to load super fast. In order to do this, certain things such as fancy image rotators need to be removed. Removed to make the pages lighter and load faster. What else has to come out? Lots of Javascript. Javascript is code that makes images move, rotate, fade and much more. AMP has it's restrictions but over time a lot of the restrictions will be lifted as the AMP code develops. It is important to keep your Online properties up to current validated code. The search engine algorithms change constantly and you can be sure they will incorporate AMP and page load speeds into the equation.
Why does this have to be done? Why do we care? Who is Google to tell us how to build a web page? Google has about 65% market share of all Internet searches. Google has said that AMP will not be a factor in how it ranks sites. In my opinion this could change. But we all agree that a slow loading web page is death. Your website visitors will not hang around and wait for a slow loading page when they can click back and press on another search result. So, we need to strive for speed and faster loading pages especially for the hand-held smart phones. Google is offering the knowledge and tools for us. I feel it is our ( the website designer and SEO specialists ) responsibility to learn this and implement it at least for our own websites. Then we need to monitor the results on how our website statistics may improve. Then pass along this information to our web clients and together try to improve the hand-held web experience for everyone. I see nothing wrong in a bare bones approach that has all the real important information and loads very fast. I like this idea. So, I have made my website, htmlfox.com "AMP" friendly ( only my home page ). I am expecting good things from this because, if you are traveling on the web super highway, slow kills - not speed.
